Medical School Training In Different Countries

Medical school training takes an almost similar route wherever one goes. Talk of Africa, United States of America, United Kingdom you name it, the only difference is the level of divulgence of the medical students. This training is offered in medical schools where students get conversant with the art of medicine. It is a course that can take a number of years. Normally, years of completion may differ from one country to the other or one college to the other.

Case in point, in the United States of America admission into functional medicine school may not require the completion of a previous degree. However, those applying are required to take at least 3 years of pre med courses at the university level. This is because in the United States of America medical degrees are classified as second entry degrees. Medical school takes four years to complete but for one to be a doctor you will need to spend three to seven years in residency.

During the four years in medical school, the medical students get training on interviewing and examining a patient and basic sciences. The third and fourth medical students do rotations at the hospitals and clinics that are affiliated with their school, culminating with taking. Here, medical training takes mainly five to seven years depending on the country of study.

The countries listed with medical school training in Africa include; Kenya, Sudan, Ghana, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Uganda, South Africa and Tunisia. Most countries have their medical training up to six years except Tunisia which has seven. In the first two years students learn about basic science followed by rotations in their third and fourth year. Thereafter, they precede to attended internship programs. This happens in their fifth or sixth year. Thereafter one is recognized as a doctor after being awarded their degree in medicine certificate.

In the United Kingdom, requirements for medical school are good grades in mathematics, biology and chemistry A levels, and a good A levels grade in an art for example, history. Students with mainly non-science A levels are a necessity if you want to study a foundation course which will add a year to the standard five undergraduate course. Like many other university degrees, UK medical schools design and deliver their own in-house assessments. Due to the UK code for higher education, first degrees especially in medicine have an integrated study system and professional practice spanning several levels. The final outcome of the study typically meets the expectations of the masters’ level which is the higher education qualification. After completion, junior doctors enroll into vocational training after which a two years foundation programme follows suit. During the programme, a number of specialties’ are undertaken. These include general medicine, general surgery, pediatrics, anesthetics or general practice.
